How Does Acupuncture work for Back Pain?
Treating back pain with acupuncture is one of our specialties at The Holistic Clinic. There are a number of reasons that back pain occurs. The most common is due to inflammation. Inflammation can be caused by the piriformis muscle being inflamed in the buttocks, which attaches to the sacrum and then pulls on the lower lumbar portion of the back. This is quite common because people have a tendency to sit all day at their office chairs, or in bucket seats in the car, or have dips in their mattress which does not properly support the back. Another reason there may be back pain is due to muscular tension in the latissimus dorsi or the trapezius muscles. These muscles attach to the spine. If there is muscular tension, this pulls on the spinal column and inflames the nerves that surround the vertebrae. Muscular tension can be caused by mineral deficiencies because the muscles need potassium, calcium and magnesium to fire an impulse to allow the muscles to contract. If deficient in the minerals it needs, it will require more work to contract, causing pain. Lastly, pain can be caused by pathogens. Bacteria, fungus and viruses can get into the bloodstream and lodge itself in the nerves. This can lead to a degradation of the nerve itself which leads to chronic long-term pain or acute sharp pain.
Acupuncture is amazing at treating all of these types of pain. Acupuncture gets to the nerve and a thin, painless needle will send an impulse down the nerve which helps to repair the issue, create new cells, create new DNA, and alleviate the log jam in the nervous system which is causing the pain. Not only does the pain get alleviated, but the body gets a whole ‘reset’ and typically people leave feeling extremely relaxed and stress free. Acupuncture is not only for back pain, its a full body reset.
