Thyroid issues, whether it be hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism have been known to cause fertility issues. Thyroid issues can prevent women from ovulating and is one of the main factors of irregular menstruation. Abnormalities in thyroid functioning can have adverse effects on reproductive health which can also include infertility, miscarriages, inability to conceive, pre-eclampsia, poor fetal growth, still birth, and premature birth.
Unfortunately, many of these thyroid issues go undetected, because the thyroid hormones being tested are at sub-clinical levels, which means that the levels detected by a blood test are not within the range to diagnose hypothyroidism, according to the medical community. However a person’s thyroid can still be overactive and just outside of this range.
It is important to get the thyroid tested if a woman is experiencing infertility issues or has had miscarriages. The thyroid produces hormones that are major components in growth and development. Therefore, a decreased thyroid level can affect the fetus at any level from fertilization to any level of growth. The relationship between the thryoid and fertility is becoming more recognized as the medical community is seeing the importance of a functional thyroid for the health of a baby.
