Most people know about Epsom salt baths for relaxing the body and the muscles, but Epsom salt has money other uses.  Epsom is a bitter saline spring found in Surrey England, which is where its name was derived.  Epsom salt is a naturally occurring magnesium and sulfate mineral compound.  Because both sulfate and magnesium are both easily absorbed by the skin, it is a great way to get the necessary and important mineral of magnesium into the body.  There are several wonderful uses for Epsom salt:

1.  For Body Relaxation:

When dissolved in water, the Epsom salt compound goes to work immediately by being absorbed by the skin.  This allows for serotonin production which helps to relieve stress and relax the mind.  An Epsom salt bath can also be invigorating, giving energy after the bath is finished.

2.  For Arterial Health:

Epsom salts promote circulation, decrease inTNammation, and helps the elasticity of the walls of the arteries.  This leads to a lower risk of plaque build up in the arteries.  Therefore, soaking in Epsom salts helps to lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve cardiovascular health (the health of both the heart and the arteries in the circulatory system).

3.  For Pain and Cramp Relief:

Epsom salts help to relieve muscles tension, cramping and inTNammation, and pain.  In addition, it helps to relieve headaches.  Epsom salt can help bodily pain or soaking in Epsom salt can relieve foot and heel pain as well.

4.  For Improved Nerve and Muscle Function:

Since Epsom salt is made of magnesium sulfate, it helps to facilitate the transmission of calcium in the nervous system.  It also helps with the cell’s TNuid retention levels.  Epsom salt baths are a great way to replenish the body’s supply of magnesium.

5.  For Regulating Blood Sugar:

Sulfate and Magnesium are minerals which help to produce insulin in the body.  Therefore, Epsom salt helps to reduce the risk of diabetes by helping to regulate the blood sugar and increase energy levels in the body.

6.  For Constipation:

Most people don’t know that Magnesium is one of the most effective natural laxatives.  It works as a saline laxative in the system.  Taking Magnesium as directed will allow for normal bowel movements.

7.  For Removing Splinters:

If you have a splinter, soaking in Epsom salt water for several minutes allows for relief of inTNammation, which causes the splinter to soften, leading to easy removal.

8.  For Easing Pain and Soreness from Bruises and Sprains:

Soaking in Epsom salt eases the soreness associated with sprains and bruises.  This helps to alleviate the aches and pains.

9.  For treating Athlete’s Foot and Fungal Infections:

By soaking the feet in Epsom salt, it helps with sore, cracked feet that may have infection.

Epsom salt helps so many different ailments because of its high content of magnesium.  Magnesium is so important because it helps to stabilize blood sugar, keeps the heart and blood vessels healthy, lowers blood pressure, keeps the bowels working properly, etc.  To find out more about magensium, see the article by Dr. Oz.  Magnesium is an essential nutrient for overall health.
